What TMS is
A drug-free depression treatment, available in Florida since 2008
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-drug treatment for depression that has been available in Florida since shortly after its 2008 clearance. It uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the region of the brain that regulates mood and that is measurably underactive in many people with treatment-resistant depression. A standard course runs five days a week for six weeks, each session lasting between three and thirty-seven minutes depending on the protocol. There is no anesthesia, no sedation, and no recovery time — most Florida patients drive themselves to and from appointments and go straight back to work.

What Florida insurers require before they approve TMS
Every major insurer operating in Florida covers TMS for major depressive disorder, but all of them require documented failure of prior treatment first. Florida Blue, the state's largest carrier, generally expects trials of multiple antidepressants from more than one class plus a course of psychotherapy. Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and Humana typically require two to four failed medication trials. Medicare covers TMS in Florida under the local coverage determination administered by First Coast Service Options, which requires trials of four medications or documented intolerance. Florida Medicaid coverage exists through the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care plans but is limited and prior authorization is strict. Most Florida clinics handle the authorization paperwork for you — ask before your consultation.
